Sam Bennett: “I didn’t expect to be in the front that long”

I just saw an opportunity. There were a lot of sections in which you had to climb before and there was a big fight to go in the front. So I thought it was a good idea to go in the break and let the peloton come back. I didn’t expect to be in the front so long. In the end I didn’t have to do go too much into the red in the gravel sections because I could set my own tempo and the legs for the final sprint. In the end, I just couldn’t get an opening in time. I had a lot of sprint in the fi ale but I couldn’t find the gap in time.
